Lumbar Stabilization
Lumbar stabilization is a series of progressive exercises which are performed to strengthen and condition the muscles of the spine and stomach. Individuals with weak back and abdominal muscles are more susceptible to back injuries and pain. Injuries can occur from lifting heavy boxes with poor body mechanics or from performing simple repetitive everyday tasks incorrectly.
Lumbar stabilization exercises are an effective way to increase back and abdominal strength and reduce the likelihood of pain and injury. Stabilization exercises are usually incorporated in back rehabilitation following injury. They are also an effective way of preventing back pain.
The idea behind any stabilization program is to start simple and progress to more advanced exercises as strength increases. When performed correctly, there should be no pain associated with stabilization exercises. There is no single exercise or group of exercises that is appropriate for every individual. Because each person has strengths and weaknesses, and patient history may vary according to previous injuries, exercises must be prescribed based on the patient's current condition.
Physical therapists are trained in assessment and instruction of exercises which can be safely performed no matter what the patient's injury or history may be. If you are recovering from a previous back injury or trying to prevent future injuries, you should consult with a physical therapist and be instructed regarding how lumbar stabilization exercises may benefit you.
